Girls Helping Girls is a unique sister-school program for middle and high school girls that partners girls in the United States with girls in developing countries around the world to dialogue and act toward the achievement of four principles that reflect the United Nations’ Millennium Development Goals: Eradicating Poverty, Increasing Access to Education, Improving Health, and Promoting Peace.
We believe that by connecting girls to participate in cultural exchange, we can inspire them to strive actively for peace and change in their communities. Girls Helping Girls’ engaging and stimulating educational program empowers girls to explore and better understand their own community, while at the same time learning about the community of their sister-group overseas and utilizing that knowledge to take positive action. Thus, Girls Helping Girls participants forge friendships across cultural boundaries, gain empowerment by discovering their own potential for change, and grow aware of the issues that face our world. Each sister-group pair is assigned one of our four global issue goals on which to focus their year-long study and communication. Each sister-group ultimately takes action to achieve their designated goal through either a local social change or micro lending project.
The intent is that through this process, girls around the world will recognize their common hardships and collaborate to address those issues to create a fraternity of common minds teaching and helping each other to make the world a better place. We envision that the girls will also gain:
o Awareness of Global Issues
o Practical Leadership Abilities
o Empowerment through a Feeling of Importance
o Compassion for Others
If we Empower a Girl, then we also Empower Her Nation.
Our goal is to transform the way both society and girls themselves view girls’ potential to make a difference. We strive to create a more knowledgeable, skilled, and empathetic generation of global citizens that will democratize the quest for peace worldwide by inspiring girls to act now to solve major global issues.
Girls Helping Girls is a non-profit corporation founded in California. Participation is free of charge. Groups wishing to participate as a sister-school for program year 2008 to 2009 must apply. Applications are reviewed annually in late July.
